The firm is an award winning national architectural, interior, engineering and planning firm with an opportunity in their Sacramento, CA office for an experienced high energy, design-sensitive Principal for the Higher Education space to work within their Arts, Community and Education practice (ACE).

About the role:

The firm is looking to expand their client services and develop their Higher Education (ACE) practice in LA. The ideal candidate will have an expertise in the Higher Education space in California. This individual will be responsible for securing new business using innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial strategies. He/She will work closely with project managers to achieve client’s goals while striving to meet the firm’s collective goals of design quality, innovation and profitability. He/She will provide leadership and oversee the activities of the project team and enhance the firm’s brand through networking, speaking opportunities and participation in professional organizations.

This is a Principal level opportunity to become an immediate shareholder in a stable, national, integrated design practice that offers the platform and resources unmatched with regional and/or boutique firms. This person will have the ability to leverage the firm’s award-winning portfolio, experience and deep bench of talent to pursue high profile Education projects. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture required; Graduate degree preferred
  • Registered Architect with current license strongly preferred
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience preferred with prior management experience as an Associate Principal, Sr. Project Manager or other leadership capacity
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience and established portfolio higher education in California
  • Strong design sensibility
  • Working knowledge of Revit/AutoCAD

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Responsible for the development and execution of a principal marketing plan. Identifies new business opportunities while nurturing current client relationships. Participates in business development activities such as networking, proposal development, interviews, speaking engagements, and professional organization related to the arts, community or higher education. Maintains positive relationships with consultants, contractors and agencies to build high performing teams and increase potential business opportunities.
  2. Conducts research, develops an understanding of client needs, and presents innovative design solutions. Establishes the client’s building program, expectations of quality, and goals for the project. Develops a scope of work, related fees and other data using the assistance of others as necessary (Market Sector Leader, COO/CEO, Marketing, Practice Group, Legal Counsel, Project Manager, etc.) prior to negotiating terms and conditions or making fee quotes. Develops terms, conditions and fees by discipline and phase that are commensurate with the firm’s procedures that enable a reasonable profit and a quality solution.
  3. Negotiates terms, conditions, fees and schedule utilizing sound business judgment.  The terms and conditions of such agreements shall clearly express the scope of services required and provide prompt payment for services adequate to meet the firm’s objectives.  Reviews the agreement with the potential client to confirm their understanding of it and that they can meet the requirements to compensate the firm for its services.  Reviews client contract with Legal Counsel and obtains their approval in advance of obtaining client signature.
  4. Communicates the building program, expectations of quality, and project goals to the project team and other project leaders as appropriate at a project kick-off meeting. Monitors the progress of the project to verify that it is consistent with established goals and objectives.
  5. Monitors the progress of the project to verify it is consistent with established goals and objectives and evaluates the working relationships between the client/project manager and team and serves to facilitate, clarify, or coach as necessary.
  6. Signs, as a representative of the firm, construction documents, contractor requests for payments, change orders, certificates of completion and similar documents related to the project, which have corporate implications.  Delegates other signatory responsibilities to the project manager.
  7. Provides adequate and timely information to accounting so that all billings and collections occur according to schedule.  Signs billings after the project manager has reviewed them and they are consistent with the work done and conditions of the contract.  Requests correction before signing and sending to client.
  8. Works with the Market Sector Leader and others to develop and implement market sector strategies and related support of various marketing activities.  Markets the interdisciplinary services of the firm consistent with the overall marketing strategy.
  9. Provides input and assists with the management for human resources;
    1. Participates in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
    2. Prepares and delivers performance reviews; provides mentorship, coaching, counseling, and opportunities for professional development.
  10. Provides a leadership style and work ethic that demonstrates the highest degree of professionalism, energy and dedication to the success of the firm.
